A homework sheet will come home each Monday in your child's homework folder. Weekly homework activities may include math review, handwriting practice, or phonics skills review. It will also consist of nightly reading and sight word practice. Homework can be completed nightly and turned in the next day or completed when you can and turned in all at once. Activities are a review of skills introduced in class and should not take more than 15 minutes to complete.
We will send home a hard copy of a book for your child to read nightly each week, but we will also utilize an online reading program called Raz-Kids for your child to read books specific to his/her level . Reading nightly and discussing stories is a great way to end the busy day and learn reading skills. You will be provided with reading strategies to help your child with decoding words at home. Each book has comprehension questions following the reading, in order for us to check for understanding. Rereading texts is also beneficial as it improves fluency and builds confidence in reading!
Rainbow Words is our class sight word program. It is not a spelling program, as sight words are words that we would like for the students to be able just to read by sight. Regularly practice Rainbow Words at home during the week. Your child can practice by just reading the words, or you can choose an activity from the list of suggested sight word activities sent home at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. It is important to practice the current color of words, but it is also important to continue to practice previous colors.
Rainbow Words and Take Home books should be returned to school each Friday!
